Portland’s Famed Italian Osteria “Nostrana” Receives Prestigious International Wine Award

Executive Chef Cathy Whims and Nostrana join the ranks of only 7 U.S. establishments awarded the Leccio d’Oro from the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium


Portland, Ore. (February 15, 2011) – The jury has spoken. Two-time James Beard nominated Chef Cathy Whims and her award-winning wood-fired Italian osteria “Nostrana” are receiving the coveted 2011 “Leccio d’Oro Osteria Prize” instituted by the Brunello Consortium of Montalcino, Italy. The Leccio d’Oro Prize is awarded every year to a restaurant, an osteria (trattoria) and a wine shop that have distinguished themselves in the presentation of Montalcino wines.

“This is an incredible honor for Nicholas and myself,” says Cathy Whims, referring to Nostrana's Wine Director Nicholas Suhor. "We've worked hard to curate a wine list that delivers an authentic Italian experience to our customers. The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino is a wonderful organization, and my staff and I are incredibly humbled by this recognition,” adds Whims. In celebration, Nostrana will be presenting a $19 flight of the following three outstanding Montalcino wines through mid-March:

  • Sesti 'Monteleccio' Toscana igt 2008
  • Pian dell'Orino Rosso di Montalcino 2006
  • Salicutti 'Piaggione' Brunello di Montalcino 2003

The Leccio d’Oro jury is made up of the following Italian and foreign food and wine experts: Faith Willinger; Alfredo Tesio; Allan Bay; Antonello Maietta as well as the President of the Consortium, Ezio Rivella; and the Vice Presidents, Donatella Cinelli Colombini, Marco Cortonesi and Giancarlo Pacenti.

Cathy Whims and her partner David West will accept the award in Montalcino, Italy on Saturday, February 19, 2011 during the Consortium’s “Benvenuto Brunello” event, where new wines on the market are presented to the press and the rating stars assigned to the new vintage are announced.

Nostrana joins the ranks of only seven other acclaimed American establishments that have been awarded the Leccio d’Oro prize.
