It’s Time for Hot Tippling at the Beagle

New York, NY (December 7, 2011) – To toast the holiday season, the Beagle, the intimate East Village spot with amazing cocktails and food to match, has introduced a menu of twilight Toddies, available nightly at the bar, from 6:00pm - 7:30pm.

“Toddies and other hot cocktails are the quintessential stuff old-timey holidays are made of,” explains Beagle owner, Matthew Piacentini. “They also require honest craftsmanship to make well; lots of sugar cubes, steeping, muddling. You're only working with a few ingredients so the flavors must be used very carefully. In the old days these were the drinks that turned certain bartenders into celebrities.”

So in their typical historic and pre-Prohibition approach to cocktails, Piacentini and Bar Manager Dan Greenbaum hit the books to research the history and spectrum of hot drinks.

The result? A menu of classics including the following:

  • Hot Toddy: Scotch, Honey, Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove, and Hot WaterWhisk(e)y Skin: Scotch or American Whisk(e)y, Sugar, Lemon Peel, and Hot WaterBrick: Choice of Spirit, Demerara Sugar, Butter, and Hot Water Negus: Port, Sherry, or Madeira, Sugar, Nutmeg, and Hot Water
  • Hot Buttered Rum: Goslings and Atlantico Rums, Butter, Honey, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Allspice, and Hot Water

And for the adventurous and creative, the Beagle encourages guests to make their own, with instructions of course.

  • Create Your Own: Use the above recipes and choose any spirit and modifiers from the lists below.

Spirits: Scotch Whisky, Irish Whiskey, American Whiskey, Genever, Cognac, Apple Brandy

Modifiers: Cinnamon, Allspice, Clove Cardamom, Nutmeg, Star Anise

On what does one nibble while sipping a hot drink? Shortbread, naturally. Chef Garrett Eagleton has created a selection of savory shortbreads (complementary with drink) that are sure to provide the right buttery balance to each hot tipple.
